From its foundation as a discipline in the nineteenth century, history was confined to the study of national history. In the past few decades, the discipline has increasingly expanded to study questions of global scope which go beyond the confines of national boundaries. At the same time, new models and theories influenced by other disciplines such as sociology, anthropology and literary studies emerged which are now fundamental to the study of history. During this introductory course, we will familiarize ourselves with some of the key theories and approaches such as postcolonialism, connected history, transculturality and global microhistory. Students will gain an understanding of the relevance of theory in the study of history and acquire fundamental tools for their future studies and research.
