The sea has been key to the cultural imagination, not least because “oceans comprise the largest and least-known space on the planet, a moving body of more-than-human power and instability” (Mentz 2009, ix). Britain’s position in this dynamic environment is characterised by the almost proverbial insular location of the country as well as its imperial history. We will discuss a range of texts engaging with the sea, the seashore, the beach, etc. such as Edmund Spenser’s sonnet 75 “One day I wrote her name upon the strand” (1595), Robert Frost’s “Neither out far nor in deep” (1936) as well as Grace Nichols’s “Epilogue – I have crossed an ocean” (2010) and Selina Thompson’s play salt. (2018), retracing the transatlantic slave route: Europe, Africa, the Caribbean. Students are also welcome to suggest further texts for our discussion in class.
Students are asked to purchase Selina Thompson's play salt. Faber & Faber plays, 2018. (ISBN 9780571352265)
