The term bibliometrics describes a set of methods for the analysis of formal characteristics of publication data and its relations (citations). It has become prominent and widely discussed during the last years and is used in various contexts, such as in science studies (e.g. for the analysis of emerging fields or the obsolescence of knowledge), for the purpose of research evaluation, or simply as a tool for the search for relevant literature.
The aim of this introductory seminar is twofold:
On the one hand, it provides an introduction into the basic concepts of bibliometrics, its contexts of application, and the citation data bases that are being used. This part of the seminar also includes discussions about the use of prominent indicators like the journal impact factor or the h-index as well as the role of rating agencies.
On the other hand, some practical bibliometric competencies will be taught. The practical sessions will include practical exercises with SQL-based bibliometric data bases on an introductory level that will enable participants to write their own (simple) scripts and requests.
Interest in quantitative methods, willingness to learn basic SQL
