This course is an exploration of the English vocabulary. We will be concerned with where the words of English come from, how new ones are created, what they mean and how they are used, who uses them, when, where and why. The goal is to expand your vocabulary and increase your awareness of the choices available for expressing yourself. Our work will also enhance your ability to understand, interpret and appreciate a variety of texts by taking words seriously, examining them closely, and becoming aware of the sources of their power and the company they keep.
You will be required to keep a vocabulary journal where you will record new words learned by individual reading and dictionary work throughout the semester. There will be periodic assessments of your progress. You are strongly urged to purchase this book:
