Opulent, sinister, uncanny; gloomy, scary, and weird, and yet so revealing and enlightning about human nature and even national narratives and local cultures: Gothic literatures focus on the underbelly of human lives, relationships, and societies and makes it possible to draw conclusions about values, norms, and ideals of a particular time and culture in a twisted, less obvious way. Haunted by monsters or just plain human depravity and fallibility, there is much more to these literary texts than meets the eye.
This class is dedicated to an investigation of the genre and its particular US-American branch. We will seek to grasp theorizations of Gothic writings and put these into practice with a wide selection of US-American Gothic literatures, from Poe to Faulkner and beyond, and from poetry to short fiction and novels. This will give us lessons in literary history and social and cultural studies as well as close-reading experiences.
