Important: The seminar will already start tomorrow on the 13th October, 2022!
Content:
Organised sport is a social sphere in which many social inequalities (e.g., in the access to participate in certain sports, or in the distribution of leadership positions such as coaches or officials) can be observed across several different dimensions (e.g., along the axes of gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, or social status). In addition, it is often argued that certain sport clubs (e.g., male-dominated football clubs) are social arenas in which values and attitudes such as nationalism, sexism and homophobia are frequently shared. Such shared beliefs and attitudes can help to reproduce existing inequalities in the sphere of sports, but also help to maintain existing inequalities beyond the realm of sport.
This student research project aims to investigate empirically the causes and consequences of such inequalities / values and attitudes and their interplay in the realm of organised sport. Students will develop their own research questions related to this topic. In cooperation with the lecturer, the students will create a web-survey that contains instruments which measure the concepts that are relevant for answering their research questions.
At the beginning of the research project, an overview of relevant theories from the field of sports sociology, inequality research and social psychology, as well as an overview of the current state of research in the field will be provided. Subsequently, the students should develop their research questions. In the second phase, the students should create a web-survey in Lime-Survey. This web-survey should contain instruments for the concepts that the students want to analyse. The field phase is planned to take place during the semester so that the students can evaluate the data they have collected themselves in the third phase of the research project. The empirical analyses will be conducted with the statistical software Stata (basic knowledge is desirable but can still be caught up on at the beginning of the seminar). For the statistical analyses, certain statistical methods from measurement theory (classical test theory and item response theory) as well as certain multivariate analysis methods (e.g., regression analyses, cluster analyses, factor analyses, structural equation models) should be used. These techniques will be discussed in more detail during the seminar.
Desired prior knowledge: Basic knowledge of (multiple) linear regression, experience with a common statistical software (Stata, SPSS, R, Python, etc.).
