In this seminar, we will first examine some of the insights from theory and research on how to use visual material effectively to support language learning and teaching. Subsequently, we will explore practical implementations of visual materials for a wide range of language learning purposes in a variety of different EFL contexts. This practical phase will include creating our own materials as well: don't worry, there will be a highly interactive and entertaining workshop that will prove to you that anyone can draw! This seminar is for students planning to teach at all levels, from primary to upper secondary school (YES, you CAN use pictures in the Oberstufe!)
The seminar will take place in hybrid format - in the classroom and simultaneously via Zoom. The material for the sessions will be uploaded in the Moodle course.
PM1 courses should generally only be taken after most of the basic modules (BM seminars) have been completed. It is recommended in the Modulhandbuch that they are taken from the 3rd semester of study on. Please note that students who started their degrees in or after 2023 have to have passed the Language Proficiency Test before taking Profile Module 1 seminars.

Die verbindlichen Modulbeschreibungen enthalten weitere Informationen, auch zu den "Leistungen" und ihren Anforderungen. Sind mehrere "Leistungsformen" möglich, entscheiden die jeweiligen Lehrenden darüber.
Participants will be expected to analyse and/or create materials and give presentations that showcase visual-based microteaching, using the kinds of materials they will need at the level(s) they are planning to teach at in future. Part of the course requirements are to do regular small drawing tasks (I will take the fear out of drawing, don't worry!) and upload them in portfolios you create in the Lernraum.
The coursework should of course have a sound theoretical basis, so students are expected to work through material from classes they might have missed and to do all the reading. Since we work with the key readings in class, it makes sense to attend them. Anyone who does not come to class and whose presentation and drawing homework seem to lack a grounding in the theoretical explorations of the class might be asked to counteract this impression in a friendly chat in my office.
