This class deals with psychological disorders prevalent in Unaccompanied Refugee Minors (URM), diagnostic tools and treatment options, including psychotherapy concepts but also short-term and low-threshold care concepts. Moreover ways in which developmental aspects might be influenced by fleeing one’s home country and aspects of culturally and linguistically-sensitive care concepts will be discussed. Students are supposed to develop understanding for the specific needs of UMRs, increase their intercultural awareness and get an overview of how to screen, diagnose and treat children and adolescents in need.
We will have two or three class sessions in which young adults will be our guests and discuss their experiences on how to start over in a new culture with us.
Master students (Psychology) can attend the class. Basic skills in cinical psychology are expected. Classes will be held in English to increase awareness for working with clients who are non-native german speakers . No advanced English skills are required and school English is sufficient.
