Timeless classics, canonic texts, masterpieces - the literary landscape is dotted with terms that imply eternal superiority, that the quality of such works must never be challenged. But what about aspects represented in those texts that are very much subject to change, that most be questioned and controversially debated in a contemporary setting? White supremacy in Gone with the Wind, the representation of women as objects in The Great Gatsby, Huckleberry Finn and the n-word are only a few cases in point in this regard.
In this class we will read a selection of US-American literary classics against the grain and see how they bear the scrutiny of a 21st-century critical reader.
