The seminar "Literature and Culture in the EFL Primary Classroom" will deal with texts for children in a variety of genres, but most prominently picture stories. We will consider their potential for use in teaching English to young learners, but also discuss questions such as amongst others: narrative techniques in visual-verbal texts and the multiple affordances of visualisations, authenticity and methods for working with the texts discussed in the classroom.
A particular focus of the seminar will be the use of authentic picturebooks for fostering intercultural communicative competence, both in regard to the more familiar 'target cultures' and to southern Africa. Here, we will explore issues relating to the choice and effective, respectful use of 'multicultural' picturebooks to foster intercultural communicative competence by critically analysing and evaluating picturebooks from/about South Africa, Lesotho and other parts of southern Africa, and considering how to use them in the primary English classroom.
Participants will present picturebooks and "perform" them with elements of the "Storytelling" approach in class, and also create and present their own picturebooks.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SEMINAR ONLY BEGINS ON 18th OCTOBER!
Important! This seminar is aimed specifically at students who are studying to become primary school teachers! Participants who are not studying for the "Lehramt Grundschule" will be asked to choose a seminar more appropriate to their course of study. The BiSEd may no longer accept it if it is in the transcript of someone doing Sek I/II when they go into the M.Ed.
The framework for the analysis of picturebooks as literary works will be selected chapters from Nikolajeva and Scott (2001): "How Picturebooks Work"; details of this and further readings will appear in the "Lernraum".
