Please note that out of the three courses in PM 8 this should be taken first. Dealing with basic theoretical background, it functions as an introduction to the topic "Teaching English as a Foreign Language". The other two courses in the module assume knowledge from this course and build upon that knowledge.
This seminar will be concerned with a methodological survey of teaching English as a foreign language. Taking the course book Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching as the basis for class work, we will analyse the methods from a historical perspective, starting with the 1950ies up to the present day. The focus is on the linguistic and didactic premises underlying the various methods. The course will conclude by demonstrating the hybrid nature of much current English language teaching and show how the various methods reviewed have influenced textbook design to the present day.
Students will need to buy the course book:
J. C. Richards and T. S. Rodgers. Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching. Second edition. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2001.
