The term “transnational” represents one of the most pervasive concepts in contemporary social and human sciences. In historical research, it informed a large and still growing number of different approaches. From the study of cultural transfers to the analysis of connected or entangled sociocultural contexts, from trans-European to global passing through (post)colonial and imperial history, the topics and aspects addressed by transnational history as a cluster term are numerous and often overlaying.
During the seminar, we will deal with this large and multi-faceted research field from a theoretical and methodological viewpoint. We will trace down its epistemic origins, discuss its paramount declinations and dip into the practices applied to translate its theoretical reflections into empirical research.
Due to the pandemic, the seminar will take place digitally (via Zoom) on a weekly basis. All literature assigned to the plenum will be in English. Nevertheless, every participant is encouraged to integrate the common reading list through specific material according her/his further language skills.
