A key task in social inequalities research is to distinguish causes from consequences. Survey experiments provide a powerful research tool to make this distinction in applied research. The course will span different survey experiment designs that tackle substantive research questions about social inequalities. In particular, the course will focus on factorial survey experiments. Factorial surveys are a complex type of experimental design in which participants evaluate one or more stimuli, allowing the identification of causal effects from multiple features of them. The course aims to provide students with practical skills for designing and analyzing survey experiments applied to research on social inequalities. The course relies on a learning by doing strategy according to which the methodology will consist of in-depth reviewing of inequalities research where factorial surveys are used. Some of the substantive subjects that will be considered are attitudes towards refugees, justification of gender pay gaps, cultural norms, unemployment benefits, among other.
