This class looks at the manifestation of modernist aesthetics in the U.S. cultural context with a focus on the 1910s/1920s and the period between World War I and II. Modernist aesthetics in the U.S. context emerged in a conflicted as well as prospering cultural environment in which controversy about the proper American literary and artistic expression infused debates in literati salons, cultural and literary journals. Next to an analysis of the use language and artistic expressions we will focus on critical reflections on hegemonic discourses and decolonizing tendencies in modernist expression. We will analyze major literary expressions of the modernist period in the novel, the essay, and the short story as well as visual arts. Our meetings will include in-class workshops and an excursion to the Marta, Herford (19th November 2022).
