Cognitive modeling has become a proven tool to investigate theories of single or interactions among multiple cognitive processes. Examples are visual attention, language acquisition and memory related phenomena like learning, recency and primacy effects or retrieval. Often, such models are developed within cognitive architectures, illustrating structual properties of the modeled system. In recent years, researchers have begun to investigate cognitive mechanisms of speech and gesture production and comprehension. In this way, explanations are offered for observed effects in speech and co-speech gesture studies.
In this block seminar, we want to briefly introduce you to the general idea behind cognitive modeling and will discuss literature on models of speech and gesture production and comprehension. The block seminar will be held in English and will take place during the semester break. As a requirement for the seminar contribution, the students will read relevant literature and prepare a presentation during the semester in consultation with the lecturers.
