In this study group
we will look at hair (of any texture) and its meaning as a cultural product and read hair as “text” to find answers to our guiding questions from a feminist-criticism point-of-view:
- How does hair work as a marker of identity in terms of gender, race, class, ethnicity, (mental) health and more?
- How are ideologically informed discourses around these markers represented in (pop-cultural) media? And how do these representations shape broader public discourses around hair in turn?
- How can we analyse and interpret hair in different representations to find out how these discourses are perpetuated or potentially subverted?
This study group offers the chance to gain 3 LP for Internationalisation@Home by taking part in the classroom discussion and handing in an essay draft of approx. 1200 words together with a short reflection letter. We´ll elaborate on the requirements in the first session.
