British fiction today is incredibly varied, multifaceted and rich in its themes and forms. Therefore, it is rather difficult to generalise about the contemporary novel. However, one thing many narratives have in common is that they are concerned with what it means to be in relationships, either as partners in a love relationship, or as members of families. In this class we will read five novels from ca. the last 20 years that cast a look - more often than not a critical one - into family bonds, the intricacies of love and various other aspects of contemporary social life.
We will read the following novels:
Pat Barker: Another World
Ian McEwan: The Child in Time
Ali Smith: The Accidental
Zadie Smith: White Teeth
Students who wish to participate must possess their own copies of the texts.
