In WS 2017/18, Bielefeld University’s English Drama Group will stage a production of The Revenger’s Tragedy (1607, possibly by Thomas Middleton, or perhaps by Cyril Tourneur). It is a farcial, macabre, Tarantino-esque romp with sick jokes, lots of blood, neurotic men worried about their masculinity and women exasperated by these men. This seminar intends to overlap with the production in several ways: The focus of our discussions will be performance-oriented, so only students prepared to take part in in-class reading and book-in-hand acting experiments need enrol for this class. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE PART IN THE EDG’S STAGE PRODUCTION, but you must be prepared to stand up and speak in class, take part in the workshops, and to research and present to the actors context information (e.g. about staging history, cultural history, genre) that might be helpful for their own work (and possibly end up in the programme notes). It is because of this requirement to attend the workshops that the class has three hours of contact time rather than the conventional two.
Thomas Middleton (or Cyril Tourneur), The Revenger's Tragedy. You must have an annotated critical edition of the play, for example the New Mermaids one edited by Brian Gibbons or the Cambridge University Press one edited by George Parfitt, or the Revels edition by R.A. Foakes. Your edition must have a proper introduction and annotations to the text.

A willingness to stand up and participate in acting exercises in class, and to occasionally attend the EDG'S rehearsals to give them feedback and to present historical and cultural contexts of the play to them. - This class has three hours of contact time (Fri 14-17), which doesn't mean that we will meet for three hours each Friday, but that there will be a couple of workshops that you are expected to attend. The first one is Saturday(!), 14 October 2017 (= a read-through of the play together with the Drama Group); the second one is Saturday, 11 November (= body work).
