This seminar will deal with the inter-American dimensions of the turbulent 1960s and how the cultural and social movements and popular cultures that emerged in this era changed societies across the Americas and had an impact on following generations. With a special focus on transnational flows between the US, the Caribbean, and Latin America, we will a take a closer on how parallel and interconnected youth rebellions against racism, sexism, capitalism and military dictatorships brought about distinct hemispheric countercultures that shaped the region and provoked repressive state respones. Students will learn about the interconnectedness of US imperialism, the Cuban Revolution, student revolts, the Vietnam War, human rights abuses under repressive regimes across the region, Black and indigenous resistance and feminist interventions and how these were reflected in popular culture and music.
