The British Isles are home to a great variety of different accents, dialects and languages, and this course provides a survey of the dominant language varieties used. Topics covered include the historical background to language variation as observed today, the relationship between standard and non-standard Englishes, multilingualism, as well as the educational implications of language diversity in the British Isles. Among the dialects and languages surveyed are Celtic languages, Scots, Cockney, Irish English, British Black English, and other European and non-European migrant languages.
