First Nation people in the Americas have been called different names, but apparently the most racist term is “Indian”. This term along with a lot of stereotypes have been used in the language and the Media to discriminate and mock first nation people. Non-natives and many natives have accepted these terms and stereotypes as natural helping without noticing to perpetuate racial discrimination. In this seminar we will learn the origins of the terms used to call first nation people in the Americas. We will discuss some examples of idioms using the term “Indian” in English and Spanish. Finally we will analyse from an Interamerican perspective poems, movies, literature, songs, that contribute to build the stereotypes of what it is “to be an Indian”.
