The course “Migration & Development: The Case of Fair Migration” presents an overview of key concepts, recent literature and debates concerning the scholarship of migration and development, with a specific focus on the framework of achieving development through “fairness.” What is fair in migration? Fair for whom? Should migration be fair for the migrants, the sending country or the destination country? What “forms” of migration (temporary, circular, permanent, etc.) are considered fair for what “types” of migrants (skilled, labor, refugees, etc.)? How did fair migration come about? How have states adopted such a framework as a policy approach to migration?
As students examine case studies from both source and host countries in different parts of the world, they will be able to understand the varying perceptions of migration-and-development and who (migrants, states, international organizations, etc.) perceives such through time. Thus, the course takes a critical approach to fair migration in particular and migration-and-development in general.
Participating students should have a very good command of the English language.
