In this course, students will get introductionary lectures on the ECHR. The lectures will take place in U8-207 and are mandatory.
General topics include: the organization of the Court / admissibility criteria / different procedures / possible verdicts / how to read the Court's jurisprudence / general principles (f.e. margin of appreciation) / absolute and relative rights / negative and positive obligations.
Furthermore, some detailed aspects are discussed, such as the privilege against self-incrimination, the double jeopardy clause.
(Legal) English on a near native level, as the exam, the lectures and all material will be in English.
Preparation
Students have to read the following cases before the start of the lectures:
Saunders vs. the UK (1996)
Jalloh vs. Germany (2006)
Zolothukin vs. Russia (2009)
A & B vs. Norway (2016)
All cases can be downloaded from the Court's databank: HUDOC (http://hudoc.echr.coe.int/)
Students will need the English text of the Convention during the lectures.

The exam will take the form of a (short) essay in English (!), about one of the discussed topics.
Please note that all the materials are in (legal) English, and that ECtHR jurisprudence tend to be long.
