"The real history of literature is the history of love" (Hayden Carruth)
For poet and literary critic Hayden Carruth studying love means studying literature and vice versa. Indeed, love ranks high among the great issues of human life literature may respond to. Looking more closely still, love and poetry are an especially fruitful combination; one we will investigate in detail in this course.
Covering a time span of over 350 years, we will look at classic poems as well as at works by contemporary US-American poets. We will combine theoretical approaches to poetry with our own close readings and thus seek to find out more about literary styles and conventions and a culture's shifting notions and concepts of love.
