For researchers, the Internet does not only offer access to vast amounts of literature and further academic resources, it also makes individuals' and communities' data visible and seemingly freely accessible to anyone with a data connection. Especially linguists frequently see whole sets of interesting data floating through cyberspace which, with traditional methodologies, would only be accessible by means of extensive fieldwork far away from the comfort zone of their own desks. Of course, this (comparatively) new approach to data collection and analysis raises numerous questions concerning actual application and methodologies of digital frameworks and also the ethics of digital data collection.
In this seminar, we will discuss the qualitative approach of digital ethnographic studies by getting to know the origins and motivations of the framework, as well as the varying applications of the approach by looking at different linguistic studies. In this context, we will also address the ethical aspects of digital ethnographies and discuss linguistic concepts of computer-mediated communication (CMC). Over the course of the seminar, students will develop their own digital ethnographic projects.
