300668 The issue of social cohesion and forced migration: the case of Syrian refugees (S) (WiSe 2022/2023)

Inhalt, Kommentar

In this course, we will try to understand the situation of Syrians and Syrian refugees from a socio-economic perspective. However, we will start the course by introducing the study field of “forced migration”, focusing on the meaning of the most important concepts, some statistics of forced migrants worldwide, major origin and destination countries, and some causes of forced migration in general.

Then we will discuss the situation of the Syrian state in a historical and cultural context; we will explain the condition of establishing the Syrian States under the French “mandate”, and how this (troubled upbringing) has influenced the social cohesion of the Syrian society. Also, we will explain the regional factors and the factors inside the society that led to the “military rule” in Syria after the country’s independence in 1947, and until today. After that, we will illustrate how the economic amendments that happened during the time of the current leader Bashar al-Assad, mainly in response to globalization, lead to the Syrian uprising that turned later into a civil war in 2010. In this part, we will try to answer questions such as: Who stands against who in this war? Why did this movement, so far, fail in establishing a democratic government?

After that, I will explain the situation of Syrian refugees inside the destination countries, (the neighboring countries of Syria (Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, and Iraq), and inside the European countries, especially Germany. However, we will start this part of our course by clarifying the meaning of integration, and the academic debate about it. In addition, we will discuss some obstacles that hinder the integration of asylum seekers and refugees in general and Syrians in particular. We will question the social cohesion among Syrians displaced inside the host countries, especially Germany. Also, we will address some kinds of imported conflicts and the changing marital relationships, divorce, and domestic violence among Syrian refugees. Additionally, we will discuss obstacles related to labor market integration, such as racism.
