1. Online Information event: Funding Opportunities for a Doctorate in Germany
The Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology is organising an information event which may be interesting for some of you on 26 June, 10 am (see the poster attached). Please register at bghs@uni-bielefeld.de<mailto:bghs@uni-bielefeld.de> until 18 June 2025 if you want to take part.
1. Save the Date: Upcoming Festival: "Think.Feel.Act"<https://www.uni-bielefeld.de/fakultaeten/erziehungswissenschaft/arbeitsgruppen/ag10/dfh-festival-2025/>
As I already wrote in the last newsletter, "Think.Feel.Act - A Future Festival for a Planetary Future," will take place from June 30 to July 5, 2025, in Bielefeld. This event will focus on addressing urgent global crises, including climate change, war, and the rise of inhumane policies.
The festival is notable for its open organization, welcoming contributions from researchers, activists, artists, students, and citizens.
Save the date: On July 1, in the evening, the film "Io Capitano" will be shown at the Bürgerwache on Siegfriedplatz. The event is organised by World Studies students and the film screening will be followed by an audience discussion on the topic of migration.
As far as I know, the organisation group is still looking for helpers. If you would like to contribute to the organisation, please contact your departmental student representative committee (studentbody.worldstudies@uni-bielefeld.de<mailto:studentbody.worldstudies@uni-bielefeld.de>) or me.
1. Save the Date: Introduction week October 6 till 10
During the introductory week for the winter semester 2025/2026, there will not only be numerous offers from the university for all new students, but we will also offer a special programme for World Studies. On Wednesday, 8 October, we will go on an excursion
to the Bertelsmann-Stiftung<https://www.bertelsmann-stiftung.de/en/home> in Gütersloh to get to know the foundation and its activities. On Thursday, 9 October, a number of interns from different organisations will report on their day-to-day work and answer your questions.
More information will follow soon.
If you have completed an internship as part of the World Studies Programme and would like to tell your fellow students about it, please get in touch with me. This programme item is also planned for the introduction week.
1. The Application period for a PROMOS scholarship for stays starting in the second half of the year 2025 (July to December) has started !
The DAAD PROMOS programme finances international mobility where funding through the Erasmus+ programme is not possible, for example in countries outside Europe. From 01.05. - 31.05.2025 you can apply to get funding for a
International students (without German citizenship) - studying at Bielefeld University in a degree programme - can only apply for projects outside their home country.

Dear Students,
We cordially invite you to the first lecture of the lecture series “Signatures of World Society” of the Institute for World Society Studies in the summer semester 2025. This semester, the lecture series is focused on the theme of “Colonialism & Law”.
On April 29, 2025 at 6:15 p.m. (CET), Prof. Dr. Fabian Klose will give a lecture titled “Enforcing Abolition and the Emergence of Humanitarian Intervention in the 19th Century”. Fabian Klose is Chair-Professor of International History and Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Cologne. His research focuses on the history of decolonization, international humanitarian law, human rights, and humanitarianism in the 19th and 20th centuries. On the history of human rights and humanitarianism he has published “Human Rights in the Shadow of Colonial Violence. The Wars of Independence in Kenya and Algeria” (Philadelphia 2013), “The Emergence of Humanitarian Intervention. Ideas and Practice from the Nineteenth Century to the Present” (Cambridge 2016), and recently “In the Cause of Humanity. A History of Humanitarian Intervention in the Long Nineteenth Century” (Cambridge 2022). He is Co-founder of the Cologne Bonn Academy in Exile (CBA) and Director of the newly founded Cologne Centre for Advanced Studies in International History and Law (CHL).
