The Public History Study Group
This study group provides a forum for BA and MA students, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral researchers interested in how history is produced, communicated, and contested in the public sphere, and how these processes can and should be critically examined. Together, we explore the identity and evolution of Public History as a field by engaging with key theoretical texts, recent publications, and contemporary debates. Our sessions combine close reading and discussion of foundational and emerging scholarship with the presentation of, and peer feedback on, ongoing research projects by group members. Crucially, we extend our inquiry beyond the seminar room. Our excursion will take us to the memorial site Stalag 326 (VI K) Senne in Bielefeld. This site visit offers the opportunity to observe “public history in action” and to reflect on the complexities of historical interpretation, representation, and reception in public settings. The study group aims to foster a collaborative and intellectually vibrant environment that encourages critical reflection and methodological innovation at the intersection of academic research and public engagement with the past.
