47 certificates for successful candidates in the current year

Passing their DSH-Prüfung is a major milestone for refugees wishing to take up university studies. The 120th DSH certificate gained since the start of preparatory German language courses for refugees at Bielefeld University in 2016 will be awarded at a small ceremony today (07.09.). Eleven of this year’s successful candidates intend to use their certificates to start studying at Bielefeld University or Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences.

This time, a total of 47 participants completed the German examination successfully and now possess the language standard for studying in German. The university applicants come from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Russia, Guinea, and Kuwait.

Eleven of those successfully completing the course are participants in the Lehrkräfte Plus programme in which refugee teachers qualify themselves to teach in Germany. Passing the DSH-Prüfung is part of their programme certificate.

Professor D. Claudia Riemer, Vice-rector for Studies and Teaching at Bielefeld University, and Professor Dr Ulrich Schäfermeier, Vice-president for Studies and Teaching at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, will be awarding the certificates today.

Bielefeld University offers preparatory German language courses for refugees in close cooperation with Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences in PunktUm, the university’s own German learning centre. Application and selection procedures are the responsibility of the clearing centre located in the International Office.

In the 2018/2019 Winter semester, a further 50 university applicants with a refugee background will be starting to prepare for their DSH-Prüfung at Bielefeld University and at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences. A further 30 will be continuing their preparatory studies to attain an even higher standard of German. The courses contain 28 teaching units per week and prepare applicants for both a study course and the DSH-Prüfung. The entire programme is financed through various sources of third-party DAAD funding. For refugees, participation is free of charge.
