Five Summer School Programmes at Bielefeld University

300 students from around the world will spend their summers studying at Bielefeld University’s Summer School Programs

Various academic faculties and departments of Bielefeld University as well as the “it’s OWL” Cluster of Excellence are organizing summer school programmes for students and international researchers at the end of the term and during the semester break. Around 300 participants will take part in continuing education and exchange activities. The spectrum of topics offered ranges from mathematical economics to literary studies, all the way to intelligent technical systems. Additionally, summer language courses in German will also be offered to international students and doctoral researchers.


Mathematical Economics


Title: Summer School: Model Uncertainty in Economics and Finance - Advances in Stochastic Calculus.
Content: Decision theory, economics, financial mathematics, Knightian uncertainty, and model uncertainty.
Program Leaders: Patrick Cheridito (Princeton, USA), Shige Peng (Peking, China), Frank Riedel (Bielefeld), Michael Röckner (Bielefeld), Chris Shannon (Berkeley, USA), Jean-Marc Tallon (Paris, Frankreich).
Dates: 7-18 July 2014.
Organized by: Bielefeld Graduate School in Theoretical Sciences (BGTS) with support from the DAAD network “From Extreme Matter to Financial Markets.” Organized by Professor Dr. Frank Riedel and Dr. Claudia Köhler.
Target Group: International graduate students in mathematics and/or mathematical economics.
Group Size: Around 50 participants from China, Italy, and the United States, among other countries.

Linguistics and Literary Studies

Title: “Queering Gender.”
Content: This summer school program is divided into two courses, each with a different focus. “Queering Suburbia: Sexuality, Race, and Gender in the Suburbs of Los Angeles,” led by guest professor Karen Tongson, takes a cultural and literary approach. “Queering Gender: Queer Linguistics,” led by William Leap, pursues a linguistic focus.
Dates: 18-25 July 2014.
Organized by: Professor Dr. Jutta Schwarzkopf and Professor Anne Schröder.
Target Group:  Primarily Master-level students studying English, literature, linguistics, and gender studies. If additional spots are available, students from other disciplines are also welcome.
Group Size: Approximately 60 participants.

Latin American Studies

Title: “Broadcasting the Americas: Academic Reflections and Media Practice on Politics and Culture.”
Content: Students will attend one of four interdisciplinary workshops offered (Ethnicity and Identity, Caribbean History and Literature, Social Movements and Human Rights, or Borderland Studies). An accompanying introduction to radio journalism is given and students will then conceptualize a radio broadcast related to a subject in their workshop.
Dates: 21 June to 1 August 2014.
Organizer: Dr. Jochen Kemner.
Target Group: Primarily Master-level students in cultural studies and social sciences with a focus on the Americas.
Group Size: Around 48 European participants from Cork, Ireland, Ljubljana, Slovenia, and Graz, Austria, among other countries.
Registration: The program is currently full, however, 2-3 students from Bielefeld could participate. The deadline for signing up is 15 July on the official registration website of Bielefeld University.

Summer German Language Course

Title: Summer German language course for international students and doctoral researchers.
Content: German language instruction at the B2/C1 level. Subject-specific instruction in law, mechatronics, economics, and academic language.
Dates: 4-28 August 2014.
Organized by: PunktUm and the International Office.
Target Group: International students and doctoral researchers who would like to refresh or improve their German language skills, as well as those who would like to prepare for a study or research program at Bielefeld University.
Group Size: Under 50, including participants from the Turkish-German University Istanbul, among others.
Registration: This course is completely full and registration is no longer possible. Courses for next summer are planned.

Intelligent Technical Systems

Title: it’s OWL Summer School.
Content: Intelligent technical systems are the key to the products and production systems of the future. The “it’s OWL” Cluster of Excellence is a forerunner in Industry 4.0. Experts from both the academe and industry will present on the essential concepts, methods, and applications pertaining to the “fourth” industrial revolution. The spectrum of topics covered in lectures, workshops, and company visits will range from self-optimization and human-machine interaction to intelligent networking and systems engineering.
Dates: 8-12 September 2014.
Organized by: Intelligent Technical Systems OstWestfalenLippe (it’s OWL).
Target Group: The course is aimed at Master’s students, doctoral researchers, and young professionals in the natural sciences and engineering, as well as mathematics and computer science.
Group Size: 30 participants from all around Germany.
