“I’m glad we are able to keep Mr Becker. Thanks to his successful work as chancellor, the university is well prepared for the challenges of the coming years,” said Dr Annette Fugmann-Heesing, chair of Bielefeld University’s University Council.

“I look forward to continuing to work with Stephan Becker. He is the right man for the upcoming tasks, and I am glad the University Electoral Committee takes the same view,” says Professor Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Sagerer, Rector of Bielefeld University. “Today’s election has ensured the necessary continuity. With his focus on personnel development and a cooperative leadership style, Stephan Becker has also provided a convincing outlook on his forthcoming term in office. The new rectorate is thus complete and, with a good mix of experienced and new members, well equipped for the coming years.”

Dr Stephan Becker has been chancellor of Bielefeld University since 2014. His first term in office was marked by farreaching change processes. The main challenges and tasks were the planning of the first construction phase for the refurbishment of the Main University Building (UHG), adjustments to the economic plans and the internal distribution of funds to the faculties, the implementation of construction projects for the growing university (as site owner), the establishment of Bielefeld Research and Innovation Campus GmbH (BRIC) as well as the planning of the infrastructural requirements for the medical faculty. He also launched a comprehensive modernisation programme for the areas of support under the title “University Administration 2025”. This encompasses such topics as process management and digitalisation, project management as well as leadership and human resources development. His guiding rationale: the areas of support—taking changing conditions into account—should be optimally geared to the university’s needs in research, studying, and teaching.

On a supra-regional level, Dr Stephan Becker assumes responsibility in particular for the digitalisation of universities. For instance, he is a member of the board of the Digital University NRW, a collaborative association of 42 universities and the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia to establish a coordinated service infrastructure for the digital transformation of universities.

The election of the chancellor was prepared by a selection committee. The election itself was held by the University Electoral Committee, which consists of the members of the senate and the external members of the University Council. Both organs have the same percentage of votes.

The chancellor of Bielefeld University is head of administration and a full-time member of the rectorate. He supervises the non-academic staff and is responsible for the budget, construction matters as well as legal and other administrative tasks.

Dr Stephan Becker was born in Hanau in 1960 and studied law in Würzburg. After his legal clerkship and second state examination, he worked as an academic co-worker at the Faculty of Law of the University of Würzburg. In 1992, he moved to Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where he also completed his doctorate. In 1994, Dr Becker joined the Berlin Senate Administration for Science and Research. His last positions there were as head of department for universities, universities of applied science, and art colleges as well as deputy head of the university department. From 2008 to 2014, he was chancellor of HTW Berlin University of Applied Sciences. He is married and has two children.
