March for Science /April 2018

Dear colleagues, members and supporters of IKG,
I very much thank for taking note of the March for Science at the 14th of April 2018:

Some may find time to join the protest marches, others might find a way to support the March for Science.

It is not a matter of this day. The public protest ended, but the causes for the public protest survive. Efforts to maintain or develop the freedom of science is a challenging issue for the future of our research on conflict and violence.
The Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on Conflict and Violence (IKG) at Bielefeld University tries to support the freedom of science and scientists. It is only a small drop, but we do not take the core values and norms of our own freedom for granted.

The scholars at risk at IKG can report what it means to lose scientific freedom.
Many of our colleagues in our scientific networks suffer from pressures.
They are not free to study conflicts and violence in a way we demand it.

Even our European colleagues in many countries are threatened and constricted, because they study conflicts and violence.
Populists and extremists try to influence science and spread fake news and false evidence to attain ideological power.

Thousands of researchers cannot study conflicts and violence because it is risky for their lives and the lives of their families and research teams. The same holds true for other fields of research in all disciplines.
We all know and observe that!
If we give up the idea that we are a research community - despite all relevant competitions and important critical discourses and debates - even save and free scientists like us will make it easy for those who fight against research which does not fit to ideologically driven interests and identities.

We all may have some options to promote our community. Thanks for taking note.
Yours faithfully

Andreas Zick
