Is it permissible to help someone who is seriously ill and wants to die? Is there a natural law at the bottom of morality or an agreement by those who are subject to moral rules? What does it mean that one should not do to someone what one does not want to experience oneself? These are examples of questions to which ethicists seek answers. In studying the Minor Subject (30 CPs) Ethics, you will systematically and historically address questions of this kind and the answers that have been proposed so far, after an overview of topics in Philosophy as a whole. You identify the strengths and weaknesses of these answers and learn to formulate new questions and answers yourself.

In addition to subject knowledge in the narrower sense, you will acquire skills in text analysis, in writing and presenting independent philosophical papers, as well as in gathering information and communicating philosophical problems interactively. The focus is on oral skills.

If you are interested in dealing with ethical questions independently under guidance, then the Minor Subject 30 CPs) in Ethics in Bielefeld is the right place for you to study. Here you will meet committed and interested teaching staff who intensively research and teach a variety of different philosophical topics in a small department. Particular emphasis is placed on Philosophy as a craft, because Philosophy is definitely something that can be learned.
