The teaching degree programmes are aimed at prospective students who want to become teachers, i.e. persons who enjoy working with pupils, who want to teach complex material with confidence, who want to motivate pupils and accompany them in their learning.
Bachelor's students of the chemistry teaching degree programme variants acquire solid subject knowledge in the core chemical subjects inorganic, organic and physical chemistry as well as in biological and analytical chemistry, which not only covers the content to be taught in the corresponding school level, but is thematically broader. They are familiarised with the subject-specific system and learn how to grasp, evaluate and present chemical facts in various contexts. In chemical laboratory practicals, they learn to work practically and to handle chemicals safely. In the process, they are taught basic knowledge of safety and environmental issues. They also learn the essential working methods of chemistry. The subject-specific training programme is supplemented by courses in chemistry didactics, which focus on subject-specific learning barriers and teaching strategies as well as the role of scientific knowledge in chemistry teaching.
Students of this variant (Minor Subject Advanced Secondary and Comprehensive School) are prepared for teaching chemistry as a subject at Advanced Secondary and Comprehensive Schools. Compared to the teaching profession version of degree programme Major Subject chemistry (Advanced Secondary and Comprehensive School), some compulsory subject-specific specialisation modules are only studied in the Master's degree. Overall, the only difference between the Bachelor's/Master's Major Subject and the Minor Subject is that in the Minor Subject version of degree programme no Bachelor's thesis is written in chemistry.
The Bachelor's programme is followed by a four-semester Master of Education with an integrated educational internship, which is a prerequisite for becoming a teacher. After the Master of Education, the preparatory service (teacher training) is completed.
