Competencies

Non-official translation of the module descriptions. Only the German version is legally binding.

The final thesis (28 CP) forms an important part of the degree programme. It documents and sponsors the final qualification for independent scientific work. Networking and exchange with other students is sponsored by colloquia and supervision by teaching staff, instructors, lecturers.

Content of teaching

The Master's thesis represents the degree of the Master's programme. The (research) colloquium is intended to support students in designing a thesis that is appropriate to their interests and, if necessary, to realise it within the framework of empirical studies.
Students should be critically supported in the selection and utilisation of the relevant specialist literature, in the choice of methods and in the writing and presentation process.

The final module consists of the Master's thesis and a colloquium. The colloquium can be used to analyse general problems in working on the thesis, to discuss interim results of the thesis, to discuss and solve problems of data procurement and similar. The event does not serve as a substitute for consultations with the supervisor of the thesis.

The Master's thesis is a written dissertation. However, it can only be issued once the introductory module and modules totaling 56 LP have been completed. The date of issue must be recorded. The processing time is six months. The scope of the thesis is approx. 160,000 characters including spaces (corresponds to approx. 70 pages). The thesis must be submitted to the examination office of the Faculty of Sociology by the deadline.
The theses are allocated a processing time (see above). Only this period is available for the entire thesis, including preparatory work. The purpose of the final theses is to independently work on a question/task of the respective degree programme within a clearly defined period of time. Students contact a supervisor for this purpose and discuss a possible task. Students should be given the opportunity to submit a proposal for the assignment. It is the examiners' responsibility to ensure that students work on an assignment that is suitable for realization within the allotted time. In the case of a hypothetically comprehensive and excellent assignment, a grade of "very good" must be justified in comparison to a typically average thesis in the respective subject. The supervisor is responsible for issuing the final assignment.
Legally, the examination procedure (as well as the course of the processing time) starts with the issue or final agreement of the assignment by the first assessor. The thesis must be registered immediately with the Faculty of Sociology's examination office, stating the supervising authorized examiner and the assignment.

Further regulations can be found in the Master's examination regulations.
