On the job market, graduates with a doctorate and a sound education are still predominantly desired, who are able to contribute constructively to interdisciplinary projects on the basis of their disciplinary knowledge. These requirements are met by a Master's degree programme in which students participate in courses from at least two main areas of Chemistry (Synthesis, Physical Chemistry, Theory and Computer Applications) and which is also open to a limited extent for courses from other mathematical-scientific subjects.

Following the guideline "Master by Research", study contents and competences are oriented towards topics of current research. In several research internships and also in the Master's thesis, students are given the opportunity to conduct relatively independent research in a given subject area, building on their disciplinary knowledge. According to the orientation of the working groups, the student will usually work on interdisciplinary topics. This both deepens the knowledge in the discipline and encourages cross-disciplinary thinking and work. In addition to the experimental, research-oriented training, other essential elements are the early integration of seminars for the discussion of current research work and research directions as well as the stimulation of creativity and the creation of research plans for the research internships.
In accordance with the above-mentioned focal points, three profiles are offered in the Chemistry Master's degree programme:

The Synthesis profile leads to scientific work in Inorganic and Organic Chemistry. Despite the focus on topics of synthesis chemistry, a sound knowledge of other topics such as Physical or Theoretical Chemistry is also acquired.

The profile Physical Chemistry leads to scientific work in Physical and Biophysical Chemistry. This focus is complemented by elective courses in Synthetic Chemistry and/or Theoretical Chemistry.

The profile Theory and Computer Applications leads to scientific work in Theoretical Chemistry, Computational Chemistry and Theoretical Chemical Physics. This profile is not only suitable for B.Sc. graduates of Chemistry, but also for B.Sc. graduates of Physics and Computer Science, for example. A large elective area allows an orientation towards the development of theoretical concepts and methods or towards application-oriented problems.

Formalities / Important information

Course start

Studies can be commenced in both winter and summer semesters. Courses are targeted to commencing studies in winter semester. Student counselling to plan the course of studies is recommended.

Length and scope of studies

The standard period of studies is 4 semesters.

The studies Chemistry comprise 120 credit points.

Access requirements

Access to the Master programme is granted to those who can provide evidence that they have a first university degree which has a standard period of study of at least six semesters, qualifies for exercising a profession and is in accordance with the subject-specific regulations.

In any case, please read the specific Admission requirements for this Masters programme in the Subject-specific regulations (PDF).
Degrees from accredited Bachelor programmes at German ‘Berufsakademien’ are equivalent to Bachelor degrees from universities.

Applicants with a university degree obtained abroad are granted access provided that the degree they have acquired is deemed sufficient for this purpose and they can provide evidence of the required language skills.
