As students, you will be familiar with reading texts for your courses. Some of you will already have been criticized for bad style or praised for the opposite. Many of you will probably have talked about different genres such as the gothic novel or the sitcom in literary and cultural studies. But what makes a text a text? And what is actually meant when we talk about style(s) and genres?
The course is designed as an introduction to text linguistics. This branch of linguistics has evolved from the 1970s onwards as an attempt to look beyond the word and the sentence. Based on the course reading, which will be announced in the first session, we will look at key concepts such as text, coherence, cohesion, style and others and use them to analyze a wide range of examples.
The reading for the course will be announced in the first session.
