Romanticism is one of the most fascinating epochs and art movements in literary history. Its ideas spread through Europe and beyond, effecting a fundamental change in our understanding of literature and art that can be still felt today. Romantic concepts and motifs permeate contemporary public culture, thus, bearing testimony to the widespread and lasting impact this movement. Yet, though Romanticism was a truly transnational phenomenon, it still took distinct forms in different countries. This course will investigate and compare the poetics, literatures and contexts of Romanticism in England and America. In this context, we will not only revisit classic authors and texts from both sides of the Atlantic, but also investigate new approaches to the study of Romanticism.
