This course will focus on theory and method appropriate for
investigating how organizations, as sites of face to face interaction,
generate and maintain social distinctions and rewards among actors.
Common distinctions might include perceptions of competence, gender,
occupation, and similar statuses which tend to motivate self and other
evaluations and channel material and social rewards. Particular
attention will be paid to observational strategies and research designs
that produce high value added data, relative to conventional survey
approaches that lack attention to organizational context and qualitative designs which often preclude observation of organizational variation.
