This will be an introduction into the recent nobel-prize winning cutting edge technologies. It will be started by explaining light-matter interactions. The basic principles of light microscopy will be used to introduce the latest advances in sub-diffraction optical microscopy. For the development of these technologies the nobel-prize in chemistry was awarded in 2014 to Hell, Betzig and Moerner. Here it will discussed how this ground-breaking technologies are introduced into recent microscopes. Particularly it will be started with describing the advances in resolution and contrast by confocal microscopy and deconvolution, following by STED, STORM/PALM and structured illumination. Wolfgang Hübner will give a on hands demonstration on different super-resolution microscopes such as STORM/PALM and structured illumination setups.
