Erasmus Mundus doctoral programme in economics

Starting today, Bielefeld University is coordinating the ‘European Doctorate in Economics - Erasmus Mundus (EDEEM)’ – an international doctoral programme in economics. The following seven  partner universities are cooperating in this doctoral training programme financed by the  European Union: Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium), Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (France), Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (France), Bielefeld University (Germany), Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia (Italy), Universiteit van Amsterdam (Netherlands), and Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal). All EDEEM doctoral students will study for three years, attend at least two of the partner universities, and receive a joint doctoral degree.

‘The opportunity to study at several top-ranking European universities and obtain a “joint degree” makes the programme particularly attractive,’ explains Professor Herbert Dawid, the new coordinator of the EDEEM consortium. ‘Coordinating the different doctoral rules and regulations is often a challenge. But we are quite happy to tackle this, because it represents an active contribution to integrating the European education system.’

Up to now, the EDEEM programme has been coordinated by the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. It is now passing on the baton to Bielefeld University. This makes Bielefeld one of three universities in Germany that are coordinating an Erasmus Mundus doctoral programme. By the end of the programme in 2018, the European Union will have funded EDEEM to the tune of approximately three million Euros.

At present, there are more than 30 doctoral students in the programme. The next selection phase is currently in full swing – and already being coordinated by Bielefeld. The international character of the programme is reflected in the nationalities of the students. Ten doctoral students from China, Vietnam, the Ukraine, Pakistan, Belgium, and Germany are working towards an EDEEM degree in Bielefeld; the first degrees will be awarded this summer. Here in Bielefeld, they are members of the Bielefeld Graduate School of Economics and Management (BiGSEM) – a cooperation between the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics and the Center for Mathematical Economics (IMW).
