Bielefeld University to coordinate the ExSIDE programme; six nations participating  

With roughly 3.8 million Euros over the next four years, the European Commission is funding a new Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Training Network in the field of economics at Bielefeld University. The topic: How do expectations come about and what role do they play in economic decisions and economic policymaking? An example: I’ve been offered a job, but it does not pay that well. Should I take the job anyway? Or do I expect to find a job elsewhere that will pay better? The name of the programme ExSIDE stands for ‘Expectations and Social Influence Dynamics in Economics’.

A Search Engine for Arguments

Bielefeld University leading new priority program in cooperation with universities from Bremen Duisburg-Essen, Leipzig, and Weimar  

Discussions on the Internet are hard to analyze, whether it is controversy over the trade agreement TTIP (Transatlantic Treaty and Investment Partnership between Europe and the United States), or the debate on refugees. These conversations sometimes take place over the course of years, and millions of participants may have their say. A new priority program funded by the German Research Foundation is working to shed light on this problem: starting in 2017, researchers from across Germany will work on a search engine for arguments. These technical systems will be designed to analyze, for instance, how groups such as PEGIDA, the far right, anti-Islamic movement, or anti-globalization activists, argue in online discussions. Bielefeld University is leading the program “Ratio” in cooperation with the Jacobs University Bremen, the University of Duisburg-Essen, Leipzig University, and the Bauhaus University Weimar.[Weiterlesen]
